  1. Bomarcs were American anti-aircraft missiles bought by the Diefenbaker government to replace the cancelled Avro Arrow. Due to public controversy, the Tories could not bring themselves to equip the Bomarcs with the nuclear warheads which they were designed to hold. This reluctance led to a worsening of Canadian-American relations and contributed to Diefenbaker's electoral defeat to Pearson in 1963.
